Becky Mendoza, Esq.Becky Mendoza is an attorney out of Encinitas, California, providing legal services to athletes and companies in the Action Sports Industry. She is licensed to practice law in both Florida and California. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, by parents who emigrated from Cuba, Becky is fluent in Spanish. Being naturally active, she grew up playing and watching mainstream team sports. She attended the University of Florida, where she graduated Cum Laude at the age of 20, with a Bachelors degree in Psychology.
Just after college, she embarked on a backpacking trip through Europe, where she pondered her life's direction and came back with a plan: to go to law school and become a mainstream sports agent. She started law school at St. Thomas University School of Law, in Miami, Florida with a great dual degree Master's program in Sports Administration. The plan was sidetracked in 2003, when she rode her first wave on a surfboard and was changed forever. In the winters, she began snowboarding and was hooked.
After this, her passion changed from mainstream sports to action sports and in 2004 she landed an internship with The Familie, now known as Wasserman Media Group's Action Sports Division (WMG, LLC) under Steve Astephen, internationally acclaimed action sports super-agent representing such superstars as Ryan Schekler, Travis Pastrana, Dave Mirra, Bob Burnquist, and Chad Reed, to name a few. She packed her bags and headed to Encinitas, California, where she didn't know a soul. At WMG, LLC, she worked on legal matters such as intellectual property litigation, sponsorship, licensing and special appearance contracts and contract drafting and review, as well as other as marketing, advertising and athlete relations duties, like preparing the athletes for and attending X Games 10. During that time she was also taking a course called Entertainment Law Transactions with Steven Novak, where she fine-tuned her contract drafting skills. By the end of the summer, she had made being a part of the action sports industry her mission.
Upon returning to Florida to finish her last year of school, she began contacting east coast contest organizers, team managers and agents, to no avail. In 2005, she graduated from Law School with a Juris Doctor and a Master's Degree in Sports Administration and immediately took and passed the Florida Bar Exam. After clerking at a Trademark Law Firm, being an associate at a Construction Litigation Law Firm and at a Civil Litigation and Real Estate Law Firm, doing everything from Family Law, Business Transactions, Real Estate Transactions, Estate Planning, etc…, her thirst to incorporate her knowledge of the law with the action sports industry grew stronger and stronger.
Finally, in 2007, Becky decided to pursue her passion, moving back to Encinitas, where she took and passed the California Bar Exam. She then landed a job as a contract attorney for World Sports, LLC, a major league baseball agency, doing general legal work for Major League Baseball players. She was also working as an attorney for International Law Group, LLP, an immigration firm specializing in professional athletes and trainers in the equestrian disciplines. Naturally, her first inclination was to incorporate what she was learning into the action sports field and so she rekindled her connection with Steve Astephen and began doing legal work for some of his pro athletes.
In March 2009, after gaining several years worth of action sports experience, contacts, and relationships as well as knowledge of the lifestyle of industry professionals, Becky decided it was time to form Action Sports Law Group. And so, ASLG was born in Encinitas, California, providing premier legal services for a number of clients, ranging from top athletes, filmers, producers, musicians, and companies involved in different aspects of the action sports industry.
